This paper introduces a dialogical approach for studying the relationships between CBOs and their more powerful partners. This entails first mapping out the interests and resources of each group, and identifying the ways in which the powerful groups are of consequence for the CBO, and vice versa. Analysis then focuses upon the representation that each organization has of the other. What are each sides’ understandings and misunderstandings of each other and their relationship? To what extent does each need to take the perspective of the other, and what resources are available for such perspective taking? Finally, attention is given to how each organization acts towards the other, focusing upon self-presentation and influencing.
